Welcome to Unison Cambridge Health Branch

UNISON members are people working in the public services, for private contractors providing public services and the essential utilities. They include manual and white collar staff working full or part time in local authorities, the NHS, colleges and schools, the electricity, gas and water industries, transport and the voluntary sector.

Local stewards are there to represent you at work and help find the answers to your problems. They are volunteers and play a vital role in recruiting new members and organising your branch. If you have a problem, talk to your local steward. If they can't handle the problem on their own, they can talk to other branch officers or full - time union experts on your behalf.

Cambridge Health branch represents all staff in the Health service within Cambridge and most of Cambridgeshire. This is both a mix of public and private employers, the main employer being the NHS in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, the Cambridge & Peterborough Mental Health Trust, East of England SHA, and the Cambridgeshire PCT.

The Branch Office is located in Duxford House on the Addenbrooke’s Hills road site, in the residency wing, which is shared with amicus, and is accessed via an intercom.
The Office is staffed Monday to Friday, from approximately 9am till 5pm, most weeks, by senior branch officers acting as duty officers, who answer incoming queries by fax, phone and email.

They also provide time and venue for client/representative meetings, co-ordinate branch activities, and deal with employers, businesses, and other trade union bodies, such as regional offices or other trade unions.

The Duty officer normally responds to each query within 48 hours, and will more than likely answer the query themselves, but will pass on the query if specialist advice is needed, or there is a representative with more working knowledge of the area in question available.

The Branch committee have recently decided to implement a system to run the Branch from 2006 onwards using a convenor system (similar to the local government structure). There would be a convenor appointed for each NHS Employer (3 in Addenbrooke’s due to its size) and further convenors for private and voluntary sectors.

These convenors would be responsible for the arranging and delegating of casework and representation, which would allow the Branch officers to carry out their roles with better ability, namely that of organising the Branch more effectively, and campaigning and being involved to a greater degree in consultations that affect our members.
